Head Coach Bruce Wilson

Head Coach - Bruce Wilson is in his 25th season as head men's basketball coach. Wilson won his 300th career game Jan. 24, 2006, when the Storm defeated Luther 69-57. Wilson broke Frank Casey's (239, 1935-54) record for wins by a Simpson head coach Nov. 27, 2001, when the Storm defeated Upper Iowa in triple overtime. His 335 wins rank Wilson among the top 50 active Division III men's basketball coaches. Wilson has been named Iowa Conference Coach of the Year three times, twice led the Storm to the league championship and earned a berth in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championships. A Simpson graduate, Wilson received his master's degree in administration and physical education from Gonzaga University where he served as an assistant coach for six years. Named NCAA Division III West Regional Coach of the Year in 1992, Wilson was also recognized by his peers with the Paul Maaske Memorial College Coach of the Year award from the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association in 1991.

Charles Zanders
Assistant Coach

Coach Zanders Des Moines Hoover team had an undefeated and State Championship season in 2006.

Assistant Coach - Charles Zanders joined the Simpson men’s basketball staff in the summer of 2009 after a highly successful six-year head coaching career at Des Moines Hoover High School. Zanders serves as the assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach on Bruce Wilson’s staff, while also contributing as an academic liaison for the athletic department and a diversity recruiter in the admissions department.

While at Hoover, Zanders compiled a career record of 100-39 in his six seasons, leading the Huskies to a Class 4A Iowa State Championship in 2006. Zanders earned the Iowa State Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year honors after Hoover’s perfect 26-0 run to the title, the first Des Moines public school to win a state basketball championship since 1978. Zanders played his prep basketball at Hoover before going to Iowa Central Community College. He finished his playing career at Grandview College.

Zanders completed a bachelor’s degree in education from Simpson in 2008 before earning a master’s degree from Graceland University in 2009. Zanders, wife Linda, and their two sons – Austin (19) and Kellen (14) – reside in Des Moines.
